A Maths Game Model for Learning Fractions
The Numeracy Development Project (NDP) is a school mathematics professional development project implemented in New Zealand since 2000. The NDP recognises students’ needs and choosing the right activities for planned instruction. Teachers are making their own games and activity materials for NDP classroom. Both the teachers and parents agreed that games help to improve children’s knowledge (Fisher & Neill, 2006). Students also think learning through playing games is fun (Young-Loveridge, 2004). However, many teachers are doubtful of the use of games towards learning. The purpose of this study is to design a maths game model for the learning of fractions. The model integrates game approaches, the Number Framework, instructional strategies, students’ misconceptions and pedagogical content knowledge. A pilot study will be conducted to testify the model in a mathematics classroom. The objective of the study is to identify students’ responses on the game approaches, teachers’ feedbacks on the instructional strategies, students’ misconceptions in fractions and the relevant pedagogical content knowledge employed by the teacher. The finding of the pilot study will provide significant information to the subsequent development of game for mathematics lessons.
