Birrigai is located in the Tidbinbilla Valley, A.C.T, 15 minutes drive from Canberra. The centre is staffed by teachers from the A.C.T Department of Education and provides an exclusive focus on environmental and outdoor education. Students attend either day programs or overnight residential camps for a maximum of three days.

Birrigai began working with the Learning by Design framework three years ago. From this we identified the need to build upon the strong experiential basis that has always been a feature of the programs at Birrigai. In particular, there was a focus on incorporating the conceptual and analytical knowledge processes into our program design.

Throughout three years of implementation at Birrigai, the Learning by Design process has been fundamental in transforming our approach to program design. This has resulted in a more comprehensive set of inclusive pedagogies that seek to engage all students at Birrigai. Furthermore, Learning by Design has facilitated the development of higher-order thinking skills amongst our students.
