E-Learning is the confluence of many technology-based learning opportunities. It enhances the ability of educators to address different audiences and allow them to diversify their teaching styles. In the last few years, e-learning has been perceived to be the spring board for lifelong learning, where learners learn how to seek out new information, think critically and show initiatives. However, e-learning is not a cheap alternative to face to face teaching. Indeed the financing of e-learning raises many questions for policy makers. The creation of quality materials creates a cost dilemma for many institutions since it has high variable and fixed cost and this makes it difficult for economies of scale to be achieved. This paper looks at cost and financing issues in e-learning, the challenges of cost reduction and strategies for sustainable funding.
